Hires Avenue
Community Garden
Hires Avenue

Hires Avenue Community Garden was founded as way to address the food crisis in Salem City.
Run by community volunteers, we provide FREE fresh vegetables & herbs to the community throughout the spring, summer, & autumn months.
It is our belief that it takes a city to raise a city.
The mission of the Salem City Community Garden project is to provide city residents with the opportunity to come together to create something that will benefit our community and promote a sense of empowerment and accomplishment in those involved. The added benefit is the conversion of vacant lot into an aesthetically-pleasing green space. We want to educate city residents on how to start and maintain a small garden filled with fruits, produce, and herbs, at a very low cost, which the participating residents will then be able to take home to their families and neighbors. We hope to reach out to the city's youth and get them involved in something productive, beneficial, and positive—teaching them that if you put in the time and effort, regardless of your age or position, you can make a positive impact in your community.

Our volunteers are the backbone of the garden! Their daily dedication to tending the community garden shows in how bountiful our crops are.

Kim Fisher (head gardener), Susan Livingston, Diane Boyce, Hannah Livingston, & Angela Thomas have poured themselves into our garden & we are just so thankful for them!
