The Salem Building Arts Center (SBAC) is a dynamic community hub dedicated to empowering individuals through hands-on training and creative exploration. Located in Salem, NJ, SBAC offers a wide range of programs, including carpentry, laser engraving, plaster casting, and more, designed to foster skills in traditional and modern crafts. Our mission is to provide accessible, high-quality education and resources that inspire personal growth, support local industries, and strengthen community ties. Whether you’re a student, an artist, or a professional, SBAC is your space to learn, create, and connect.
To Build a Brighter Future
In 2017, work began on rehabilitating the JC Penney, the once-booming Salem City landmark. Eight years later, the building has been restored to its original glory, all while staying true to our original goal – to provide a place where the community can grow, learn, and connect to its history.
Breathing new life into the JC Penney property by opening its doors to teach preservation and building arts connects the existing fabric of the building to the surrounding city’s history, as well as its future. We are so proud to welcome you to 225 East Broadway in historic Salem, New Jersey.

Aligning with the mission of SUFS, the SBAC will strive to be the trusted engine that facilitates educational building arts activities for constituents across Salem County and the surrounding region, to develop marketable skills for youth and others, restore historic buildings, and create opportunities that provide real benefits to society and future generations.
